Party Rock Frocks

If you're going out on the town tonight to celebrate New Years Eve, and are still undecided on what to wear, here are some ideas that may help. I've selected a few party frocks to inspire you to ring in 2012 with savoir faire. We all have something in our closets that are either printed, colourful, simple or sparkly; this is a good opportunity to take it off the hanger and wear it with your best pair of heels.

There is a saying that goes "what you're doing at exactly midnight on New Years Eve is a reflection of how the rest of your year will go". If that's anything to go by, then what you're wearing on New Years Eve should also set the tone for the year ahead. So make it sassy, sweet and stylish and hopefully that will signify a fashionable year to follow!

What is your New Years style going to be like?
Wishing you a terrific 2012! Going out or staying in, whatever your plans are, I hope that you have a great one!

My Christmas Weekend

Ten Things I Did This Christmas

1. Spent the four day weekend with 40 of my closest family members at the Alpine Heath Resort, which is set in the heart of the glorious Northern Drakensberg Mountains. It was fun, peaceful and relaxing, with none of the drama of last year's trip, thank goodness.

The majestic Drakensberg Mountains

2. Ate more ice cream in one weekend than I did the entire summer. I don't want to see another Paddle Pop again - or at least for the next week or two ;)

3. Got my yearly dose of Vitamin D by spending an enormous amount of time relaxing by the pool, in the scorching midday sun.

The serene view from the spa

4. Indulged in blissful treatments at the heavenly Alpine spa, which overlooked a tranquil lake and resplendent green mountains. It was so r that I only left because I probably would have been forcibly removed if I didn't.

5. Watched 'Home Alone' on Christmas Day with six of my adorable little cousins. I remember seeing it all through my childhood years. It's still the best holiday movie around.

6. Befriended a peacock who took shelter at our chalet during a rain storm. It was the first time I've seen one of these magnificent creatures up-close. They are truly beautiful.

7. Got hoaxed into going for a hike. I seriously don't know how this happened, as I am the least outdoorsy person around.

8. Wore harem pants after I swore that I wouldn't in this post. What was I thinking?

A view of the resort

9. After winning 3 consecutive games of 30 Seconds in a row, my team (aka The Gossip Girls) lost the grande finale against the team of underdogs (aka Our Mums aka The Desperate Housewives), who until that moment had lost every other game. And there were a lot, believe me. They even beat out our main competitors - aka our brainiac dads, whose team was aptly named The Big Bang Theory. Looking forward to next year's championship, we will come prepared for victory ;)

10. Most importantly, I spent quality time with my awe-inspiring family over good food, good laughs and we created great new memories. And there are no amount of gifts in the world which can top that.

The Many Coats Of Pippa Middleton

Pippa Middleton
Winter Street Style

Pippa Middleton is hailed as a Brit It-Girl and fashion icon, admired for her sophisticated style and graceful demeanor. She has become widely known, along with her sister Kate Middleton, for their timeless style that is easy to attain. Pippa demonstrates that looking polished isn't always about high-end labels or high heels. The simplest of styles can be the most appealing.

For Winter 2011, Pippa has been sporting a variety of elegant coats, in different shapes, fabrics and colours. Pippa is an expert at making optimal use of her accessories, which is something we can all relate to. Her no-fail formula for a dashing winter's day work outfit are: A classic coat, black tights or skinny jeans, a deluxe leather handbag, knee-high boots and a voguish pair of Chanel sunglasses. And she gets it right every time. Here is some street style inspiration featuring the many coats from the closet of Pippa Middleton.

1. Pippa colours a grey winter's day in a bright blue double-breasted Ted Baker trench coat over black leggings and Russell and Bromley black boots. She accessorizes with a heart print Beulah London scarf and Modalu bag.
2. Pippa rules in red, with a collarless coat by Zara. French Connection skinny jeans, a brown croc Modalu bag and tan suede boots complete her cozy look.
3. She wears a chic tuxedo style jacket in royal blue with black velvet lapels & collar, by Sara Berman. It's paired with a simple black dress, tights, ankle boots & her favourite black bag.
4. Pippa put on a cute blue, black and grey checked coat over skinny jeans and her Russell and Bromley boots. Customary bag of choice by Modalu.

5. Pippa wears an army green Fay duffle coat with tan leather buckle detail. Underneath she has on a printed Alice by Temperley top. Her tan boots & Modalu bag are added to this look.
6. Her zip-up black coat is from Zara, teamed with a leopard print scarf, her much-loved tan boots and a tan Modalu bag.
7. Pippa is wrapped up in a dark brown Susannah robe coat, carrying a two-tone Loewe hangbag and wearing her comfy black boots.
8. Another military green coat, this one in a different style, by Reiss. It's worn with a leopard print scarf, Loewe bag and her trusty flat tan boots.

9. Ms Middleton looks smart in a linen blend charcoal grey trench by Reiss, with black sheer tights, black ankle boots and Modalu oyster croc bag. Her faux fur stole adds a luxurious element to this outfit.
10. Her adorable heart print grey and black dress is by Markus Lupfer, worn under a chic Zara blazer. She carries the same croc bag and wears Nicholas Kirkwood flats.
11. Pippa looks lovely in a slate grey wool coat with clinched waist and black edging. Her Russell and Bromley knee-high boots and Modalu bag make another appearance.
12. A grey A-line duffle coat with puff collar by Fay worn over a matching grey dress, with opaque black tights and black boots.

Pippa may only be as famous as that bridesmaid dress she wore to Prince William and Kate's wedding, but even if she wasn't a media made celebrity - if she were just a stranger that passed you by on a sidewalk somewhere, you would probably turn around and think, "Well, that's one stylish girl."

Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2012

Monique Lhuillier fine tunes uptown elegance for her Pre-Fall 2012 collection. With minimal use of colour and an abundance of ideas, she has created day and evening wear that personifies femininity in it's most favorable form. Lace covered dresses that are fit for a high tea at the palace, or for the fashion-conscious bridesmaid. Then there are extravagant evening gowns that beg to be shown off at prime red carpet events.

Besides for innovative black and white prints, Monique has used blue as a primary colour choice. From cobalt to sapphire, indigo and navy, to shades of midnight, this collection gives new meaning to the term 'feeling blue'. We are presented with jubilant blue creations, in draped chiffon, full tulle skirts, satin ruffles and impeccably placed lace. Silhouettes are kept full and billowy, suited for any type of figure.

The one dress that I'd really like to see worn on the red carpet is the second last one at the end - which has royal blue lace gently adorning a nude tulle gown. Perhaps on someone regal like Kate Middleton or even Keira Knightly.

Looks Of The Week - 24/12/11

There were not many red carpet looks this week, seeing that it's so close to the holidays. However, I did find some wintery street style inspiration. I'm off for the 4-day Christmas Weekend, so see you on the flipside.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley looked chic in LA, wearing a cream blazer and beige tee with cropped straight leg Burberry jeans. She added ivory Rag & Bone boots, a Chanel bag and leopard print scarf.
Ashley Tisdale wears my favourite look of the week. The former Disney starlet looked snazzy in a black and white striped top, with an Alice + Olivia pleated leather skirt. She carries a Chanel chain-handle bag and wears adorable red ankle platform boots.
Eva Mendes clashes prints with a multi-coloured blouse and leopard print scarf, (which looks like the exact same one Rosie is wearing). Eva wears army green jeans, brown suede boots and a Salvatore Ferragamo bag. A lot of different things going on here, but the central brown theme ties it all together.
Pixie Lott looked terrific in her boyish ensemble while out in London. The singer paired a black leather jacket and shorts with a prim white button-up shirt. What elevates her look are those cute Pamela Mann Lily leopard leggings and ruby red brogues. Have you noticed that the inner fabric of her jacket matches her tights?

Blake Lively shows off her suave biker style in Massachusetts. The actress wears a cropped leather biker jacket and distressed skinny jeans, both by Diesel. She broke up the all-black ensemble with a printed Theodora & Callum scarf. She walks in high-heeled biker boots. Her brown bag is by Givenchy.
Kate Moss is boho-London-chic in an ivory and brown cropped fur coat, with animal print cardigan and black trousers.
Olivia Palermo looked savvy on the sidewalks of New York, wearing a chocolate brown double-breasted coat by Pringle. Her beige flare-fit jeans are by MiH. Olivia is wrapped up in an animal print scarf, which seems to a very popular choice this week. Her tan studded croc bag is by Valentino.
Jessica Alba looks classic in a white silk chiffon dress by Charles Henry, paired with a black blazer and black tights, her bag by Bvlgari.
Nicole Richie took her trailblazing style to the streets of Beverly Hills. She wore a black faux fur jacket by Helmut Lang, along with blue skinny jeans. Her splendid lace-up high-heeled boots are by House of Harlow. Nicole accessorized with an Artemis Wragge scarf & Celine bag.

Naeem Khan Pre-Fall 2012

Naeem Khan has been gaining fame with a slew of celebrity clients such as Florence Welch, Julianne Hough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and even Michelle Obama. He masterly crafts elegant and feminine gowns with interesting shapes, and in sumptuous fabrics. He applied this same aesthetic to his Pre-Fall 2012 collection, in which sequins were the order of the day, delicately layered upon slinky silk and chiffon gowns.

The colour palette began with sugary pink and creamy white shades, then blazed into amazing brights like cerise, lime and daffodil. Khan added a dash of animal print, for a more dressed down evening look, showing that he isn't only about glitzy embellishments. The range concludes with a few black feathered frocks and an outstanding ivory gown with beaded bodice and voluminous skirt, which would make for an opulent wedding dress.

Khan experimented with different types of necklines, which keeps the collection from being monotonous. What I appreciate about this range is that each look is unique, and not a continuation of the one before. My favourite piece is the first dusky rose tulle dress below. Which is yours?

Friday Frills

"Stop thinking about the past, and dont worry too much about whats going to happen in the future. Your presence is a present, so live for today, and appreciate everyone and everything you have.

Stop thinking about what you dont have, what you wish you had, who walked out of your life, and whatever else that falls in that category.
Think about what you have, who you have in your life, and how fortunate you are."

Wishing you all Happy Holidays and a Wonderful Christmas Weekend!

A Ray Of Style #3

Floral Coral
Outfit Post by Ray
I asked my darling cousin Ray to share another outfit post for my blog. I'm thankful she obliged, but unfortunately her designated photographer (aka 'little brother') was mysteriously on sick leave. I think maybe he is 'sick' of us two dragging him into fashion shoots, getting him unwillingly involved, all without pay. Little brothers...gotta love 'em & bribe them ;) From these photos, it seems she's found a temporary replacement.

She Wears:

Coral self-printed top - Forever New
Denim blue skinny jeans
Turquoise shoulder bag with tan straps - Gorgeous
Floral sequined brogues - Forever 21
Metallic headband - Forever 21

Love these brogues, if she were my size I would've stolen them by now.

*Special Thanks to Raysa for the outfit photos.

Dress Déja Vu

When I saw Kat Graham wearing this cobalt blue gown, I went back to my archives, thinking it was the same one Jessica Alba wore 10 months ago. But it isn't the same dress, just a serious case of copycat couture.

Left: Jessica Alba looked regal in this electric blue silk strapless gown with sweetheart neckline, empire waist and gathered maxi skirt. The gown, which is by Atelier Versace, was worn by Jessica on 13 February 2011 to the BAFTA Awards. She wore her hair up in a braided hairstyle, and added a gold, turquoise and blue necklace.
Right: Kat Graham wore a very similar gown last week (10 December 2011) at the 'Ripple Effect Charity Dinner'. Her blue micropleated silk dress is by couturier Lloyd Klein. It is also strapless, same shade of striking blue, with an empire waist and flowing floor-length skirt. The only major difference is the bandeau neckline and empire style. Kat wore her hair in voluminous waves.

I prefer Jessica's dress and styling. Do you think this is a blatant copy or just a coincidence?

An Essentiel Winter 2012

Essentiel
Fall/Winter 2011-12

Who says that winter fashion has to be about dull greys and lifeless shades of beige. Essentiel revitalizes your Winter wardrobe this season with bold brights and fearless colour-block combinations. The Belgian fashion label has become a favourite of mine, as all their pieces retain that comfort factor while being youthful and trendy.

For Winter 2011-12, Essentiel offers chunky knits in optimistic shades like sunflower yellow, cerise pink and tangerine. Their classically fit jackets in varying lengths are suitable for work-to-weekend wear. Stripes are seen on jerseys, woolly scarves, skirts and bags. Keeping up with worldwide trends, there is also a fair amount of coloured demin in this range. Trousers are high-waisted, tapered or cropped at the ankle. Essentiel pushes the boundaries of colour-blocking, teeming shades like red, yellow and purple together.

The collection wavers between masculine and feminine tailoring. Elegant blouses in saturated shades of coral and green are tied up with pussy-cat bows. Besides for the typical black leather jacket, try your hand at one in exotic emerald green. Basic shift dresses are belted and paired with contrasting coloured clutch bags. All the charming accessories you see are also part of the Essentiel range, including the mammoth furry bags, high-heeled moccasins, jewel-toned shoes, cute banded socks and gloves. This collection proves that being stylish and discernible does not require having any fanciful airs. It focuses on fashion that is more wearable and relaxed, with an update on basics and experimenting with playful pigments.

Looks Of The Week - 17/12/11

My picks of the best and worst outfits worn this week.

Black & White
Rachel Zoe was in San Diego to promote her Spring 2012 line at Nordstrom. The stylist was tastefully dressed in a high-collared white maxi dress, which she clinched in with a wide leather belt. She finished her look with a tailored black blazer, gold cuff and long necklaces.
Kristen Cavallari does boho-chic effortlessly, while in Malibu. The reality star wore all black with a fabulous white faux fur jacket. She accessorized with a black floppy hat, Alexander Wang duffle bag and Christian Louboutin 'Moulage' platforms.
Paz Vega attended the Marrakech Film Festival earlier this week. The Spanish actress looked prim and poised in a black 3/4 sleeve Moschino dress with white accents.
Amber Heard was spotted on the streets of NYC in an embroidered Proenza Schouler bouclé jacket, worn over a black and white Dolce & Gabbana dress.

The Dresses That Impressed
Kaley Cuoco looked rather fetching in an ivory tulle and lace embroidered Tadashi Shoji dress, which has a grosgrain ribbon belt. Her choice of heels could have been more exciting.
Nina Dobrev smoldered in a black bustier dress with scalloped lace neckline and pencil skirt, by Monique Lhuillier. I was immediately drawn to her hot pink Brian Atwood pumps, which add a playful touch to this otherwise formal look.
Blake Lively looked delightful in Gucci at a Sprinkles Cupcakes event in New York. The Gossip Girl star wore a gold pleated metallic skirt with a cream blouse and gold floral brooch. She chose dark green Brian Atwood pumps to go with her look. Might I add, she was there to bake cupcakes for charity. Only Blake could bake in Gucci.
Kate Mara stood out in coral at 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' movie premiere in NYC. The actress looked pretty in a pleated chiffon Christian Dior dress with tie-up shoulder detail. She carried a sequined Miu Miu clutch, and walked in Brian Atwood metallic pumps. As you can tell from the last three looks, this was a really good week for Atwood.
Brooklyn Decker also wore Christian Dior this week, at an event hosted by CNN. The model opted for a revised 20's look in a cream & gold shimmer dress with frilled hem. Her choice of heels perfectly complimented the dress, with tie-up metallic gold Loeffler Randal sandals.

 The Ones That Didn't
Fergie was out in LA wearing this oversized fur-sleeved coat. It appears that she's transitioning to play a werewolf in the next Twilight movie.
Natalia Vodianova shows us what happened when she literally painted the town (and herself) red. She clearly took the song 'Lady in Red' too seriously.
Whitney Port in a mishmash of ideas and shapes that don't quite work together.
Jessica Stroup rolled out of bed in a gold satin night dress to attend a charity benefit in California. She's always dressed well on 90210, I don't know what happened here. Could she have not borrowed some of the clothes from set?

Friday Frills

There comes a time in your life when you have to walk away from all the drama, and the people who create it.
Surround yourself with people who make you smile.

Remind yourself of who you are and where you want to be.
Stand up for what you believe in, even if it means standing alone.

Forget the bad and focus on the good.
Love the people who treat you right, forgive the ones who don't.

If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it.
Because in the end, we will only regret those chances we didn't take, relationships we were afraid to have and decisions we waited too long to make.

Life is too short to be anything but happy.
Hold on to the memories, let go of the regrets.
Falling down is part of life, but getting back up is living.

Same Dress, Different Shade

Which Marc Jacobs Dress Do You Prefer?
Pink or Blue?

This aqua Marc Jacobs Resort 2012 dress made it's debut on the red carpet earlier this year, worn by the lovely Elle Fanning. 6 months later, Fan Bing Bing wore the same dress, which has been revived in a blushing shade of bubblegum pink. Two very different stars, on two opposite sides of the planet...Who wears it better?

Fan Bing Bing looked radiant at a movie premiere in South Korea this week (13 December). The Asian actress wore the Marc Jacobs sheer tulle dress, which is delicately adorned with a scattering of shaded pink floral appliqués. A red leather belt defined her waist, while sky-high nude Louboutin Mary-Janes were her choice of footwear.
Australian model Julia Nobis displayed the dress as part of Marc Jacobs' Resort 2012 collection. She was styled with a white belt and blue shimmery heels. You can see the transparent effect of the dress is this photograph, whereas the others have been modified for the red carpet.
Elle Fanning wore the dreamy sea blue version of the dress for the 'Women in Film' awards on 16 June in Beverly Hills. The floral motifs on her dress are a lighter shade of blue. Elle left out the belt and added a fun pop of colour with coral Chanel sling-backs.

I prefer (and not because pink is my colour) Fan's dress more. It fits her better and that red belt was a winning choice. Though I'm not too keen on the heavy platforms heels. If Elle had added a belt, it would have made a huge difference. Which version of the Marc Jacobs dress do you prefer, Pink or Blue?

French Indian Flair, Done The Chanel Way

Chanel
Pre-Fall Collection 2012

From the chic streets of Paris to exotic India, Karl Lagerfeld takes us on an intercontinental voyage for Pre-Fall 2012. His Paris-Bombay inspired collection is a collision of French tailoring and Indian intricacies. The result? Pure, over-the-top opulence.

The quintessential Chanel emblems are all there, albeit not as conspicuous as we're used to seeing. The impeccably fit pants, traces of tweed, boxy shapes, braided trims, the black and ivory palette, rows of pearls and the classic skirt and coat combination. Lagerfeld has an ingenious way to breathing new life into the established Chanel prototype.

Fur-edged coats in rich brocade are sumptuously paired with velvet and lamé. Indian-styled churidar (narrow) pants are a prominent feature in this collection. Flat footwear and bejeweled chappals (sandals) kept within character of the Eastern theme.

The colour scheme varied slightly from it's neutral foundation, pigmented by shades of ruby red, deep burgundy, magenta and neon pink. Lagerfeld didn't stray too far from the fundamentals of Indian fashion; which are intricate embellishings and traditional silhouettes. He's used the layering of dresses over narrow pants to his full advantage. It's a concept he's used, (perhaps overused) throughout this collection.

Lagerfeld puts a modern spin on imperial Indian designs with Eurocentric flair. He chose metallics tones such as bronze, pewter, platinum, silver and gold to convey the luxury element of the range. The models wore their hair in pinned-up dreadlocks, adorned with bejeweled tikka headpieces.

This range of evening wear shows Lagerfeld's ability to reinterpret the worn-out idea of a 'glamorous gown'. Instead of the expected strapless, mermaid or ballgown styles, he gives us modest designs elevated by rich embroidery & crystal beading, all laid upon exquisite fabrics.

Polished ivory silk proved its adaptability, being draped into tulip skirts, & then molded to form sleek Nehru coats. I found this section to be the calm after the lavish storm of looks shown before. The second last dress & the blue one above are my favourites from the range.

With a collection that exudes this much grandeur, it's saving grace lies in the individual pieces. Most of them can be worn as separates. Otherwise, I could only imagine these elaborate ensembles being suited for a high tea at the Taj Mahal, in 1658. But take away the excessive styling, Medusa-like hairstyles and ornate jewellery, and you would have some red-carpet worthy looks. I get that these outfits are not to everyone's taste, but hats off to Mr Lagerfeld for transporting us to a world where Indian custom meets French couture, the Chanel way.

Looks Of The Week - 10/12/11

A round-up of my favourite fashions this week.

Smart Casual
Kirsten Dunst exemplifies chic sophistication in a midnight blue trench coat by Burberry, with Dolce & Gabbana platforms and a quilted Chanel bag.
Emma Roberts whirled a few pretty Rebecca Taylor pieces together for the designer's store opening in LA. Emma wore a green blouse under a scalloped tan coat, with a cute heart print skirt. A Prada clutch, black tights and ankle boots complete her look.
Sarah Jessica Parker looked every bit 'Carrie Bradshaw' on the streets of New York. The 46-year-old actress wore a white self-print dress and beige coat by Valentino. I love the addition of the vibrant aqua American Apparel tights, complimented by Jimmy Choo heels.
I am as shocked as you are to be featuring Lindsay Lohan on my list of favourites this week. But I couldn't deny that the fallen starlet looked dashing in her 70's inspired getup. She wears burgundy corduroy skinnies by Genetic Denim with an ivory blouse, tan floppy hat and incredible Yves Saint Laurent 'Tribtoo' pumps.

Glimmer & Lace
Lily Collins was in attendance at 'The Hollywood Reporter's Power 100 Women's Breakfast'. The beautiful brunette was refreshing in a lacy 'little blue dress' by BCBG/MaxAzria.
Emma Watson looked like a porcelain doll at the Lancome VIP Dinner in Hong Kong. The British star wore a navy blue Elie Saab dress with embellished bodice and full tulle skirt. Silver Jimmy Choo sandals fit her feet.
Claire Danes looked radiant at the Valentino Virtual Museum Launch party. She wore a crimson red embroidered lace dress by Valentino, paired with a black clutch and heels.
Olivia Palermo dazzles in a sparkly black number by Marchesa. She accessorized with mink studded heels and clutch bag, both by Valentino.
Jameela Jamil added a touch of tinsel to her menswear-inspired look. The British TV presenter wore a sequined tuxedo jacket over a long white shirt and tie, along with leather leggings and black platforms.

Glamorous Gowns
Lea Michele stunned at the 'New Year's Eve' premiere in New York. The Glee star wore a glistening gold gown with plunging neck by Valentino.
Rose McGowan delighted in a berry-tinged dress at the Unicef Ball in Beverly Hills. Her mermaid gown adorned with floral appliqués is by Dolce & Gabbana
Emily Blunt looked graceful in a strapless fuchsia gown with frilled bodice by Marchesa. Her new hairstyle does wonders for her.
Coco Rocha looked elegant at the Milk Gallery in New York, wearing a twilight blue embroidered gown by Zac Posen.
Jessica Biel also walked the black carpet at the 'New Year's Eve' movie premiere. The actress looked sensational in a long-sleeved Valentino gown with shimmery striped detailing.

Celeb Style - Leopard Print Pants

Trendspotting
Leopard Print Pants

Celebrities know a good pair of leopard print pants when they see one. That's why this pair by Current/Elliott has been so popular on the streets on Hollywood. The Current/Elliott 'Stiletto Leopard Print Pants' is a fierce yet fun pair that shows off your wild side in a flattering skinny silhouette. It's best paired with a neutral coloured top and can be worn with boots, heels or flats. You can jazz things up by adding a flash of colour with bright accessories.

Top Row: Grey Leopard Print
Anna Paquin wears her jeans with a black cropped leather jacket and charcoal tee. She interestingly pairs it with dark green suede boots by Jeffery Campbell.
Elizabeth Olsen is styled for a magazine wearing the pants, along with a black & white Porter Grey jersey, red Kat cloche hat & mustard Christian Louboutin 'Bambou' platforms.
Emily Blunt kept her look simple with a plain black t-shirt and flat black Fiorentini + Baker ankle boots. She also wears Ray Ban sunglasses.
Nicky Hilton teamed her LP pair with a long black tee and ballet flats.

Bottom Row: Camel Leopard Print
Fergie styled things up a notch with a tank top by Obesity & Speed, along with a fiery red vest, chunky necklace and black gladiator sandals.
Romanian singer Inna wears her LP pants with a light grey half tucked-in tee, cream cropped and studded biker jacket and black high boots.
Mandy Moore opted for a simple look with a dark grey t-shirt and black flats.
Kimora Lee Simmons also wore a grey top, under a black coat, with suede ankle boots.

The Current/Elliott pair of stretch skinny jeans comes in two shades, grey and camel. The leopard print design is slightly faded which gives it a more casual look. It costs $198 or R1600 and can be bought online from Nordstrom or Piperlime.

How would you wear this trend?
