Friday Frills

To laugh often and much

To win the respect of intelligent people

To gain the affection of children

To learn the appreciation of honest critics

To endure the betrayal of false friends

To appreciate beauty

To find the best in others

To leave the world a bit better

To know one life has breathed easier because you lived

...This is to have succeeded...

The Leather Dress Trend

This season, the regular time-honoured 'LBD' has been replaced by the 'BLD' or as we know it - the 'Black Leather Dress'. This massive trend has been building momentum since the Fall/Winter 2012 fashion weeks in February, seen on catwalks from New York to Milan. Easy to style and effortless to wear, the little black leather dress serves as an edgier (and warmer) alternative to your classic LBD, dispensing a glossier, goth chic appeal.

On The Runway
The misconception that leather dresses have to be skintight and curve-hugging has been dispelled thanks to designers like Valentino, Gianfranco Ferre and Jean Paul Gaultier, who have created more capacious versions. However, if you do prefer the second-skin silhouette, Reem Acra, Pucci and Sportmax have got you covered, whilst Calvin Klein and Givenchy have opted for a flattering fit-and-flare style.

Celebrity Inspired Leather Looks
Ideal for cold winter nights, the long-sleeved leather mini has been a favourite amongst celebrities, as it provides a sleek, streamlined silhouette and oozes urbane glamour. Paired with ankle boots or strappy sandals, this is the perfect after-dark winter outfit.

The sleeveless or strapless leather dress is also an alluring choice as seen on Cody Horn, Nicky Hilton and Jessica Alba. Adding a pair of ankle-strap heels and studded accessories enhance the edginess of this look. And don't forget a red-hot lip colour for an extra dose of glamour.

Get With The Trend

You're not limited with choices when it comes to translating this trend off the runway & into reality. Be it elegant, sporty, sexy or sophisticated, there's a leather dress to suit your style.

My Life As A Movie

I recently watched an outstanding advert on our local TV screens & had to share it with you. Beautifully scripted, magically inspired & true to life, the M-Net ad campaign is entitled 'My Life As A Movie', and portrays one's life as if it were lived as a silver screen Hollywood production.

The thought-provoking trailer reminds us of the fine line between life and film. They both their fair share of drama, adventure, love and romance, joy, sorrow, the thrilling moments and the scary ones. Every person who plays a role in our lives are like cinematic characters; each with their own conventions, charms and quirks. I hope you will find this video as memorable and heart-warming as I do...I've included the script below.

In my life...
I've beaten the odds,
I've been the star of the show
And the loser no one wants to know.

I've known heroes and villains;
Heroes who turned out to be villains.
I've known true love...
and lost it too.

I've lived in fantasy worlds
Been written out of stories,
Written off.

I've lost my way...Lost myself...Lost the plot
And had entire conversations without saying a word.
I've had second chances,
Third ones too
And I've come back again.

I've found myself in complete darkness
And I've seen the light
I fought with the director....He humored me.

I used to think that magic only happened in the movies
But then it happened to me.

This inspired me to ask the question:
If there were a movie made of your life, who would you pick to best portray 'You'?
I look forward to hearing your casting choices.

Karlie Kloss Does Duality for Vogue China

Cover Girl Karlie Kloss
Vogue China December 2012

Making a splash on the year end issue of Vogue China, Karlie Kloss shows off her appealing mystique in a set of dusky designer wear from some of Fall/Winter 2013's best collections. The elegantly shot editorial depicts fashion duality and highlights the difference between feminine and masculine tailoring. Entitled 'Black Night', the only dose of festive scarlet red colour was featured on the cover, which rates as one of my favourites for December 2012.

Karlie Kloss delivers high-amp glamour on the December 2012 cover of Vogue China. She is red haute in a stunning silk Valentino Couture Fall 2012 gown with sheer neck, sleeves and skirt, enshrouded by a voluminous pleated cape.

Set One
Karlie dons an elegant peasant sleeve, high-neck Gucci gown with chiffon pleated skirt and velvet inserts. Her sparkly shoes are by Arfango. In an androgynous contrast, to the right, she is pictured in a cropped tailcoat, bustier and high-waisted trousers, all from Jean Paul Gaultier's Fall Couture collection. Her chunky heels are by Miu Miu.

Set Two
To the left, Karlie is decked out in a sexy and sleek-fitting Tom Ford gown with velvet panels placed in all the right places. Her menswear inspired ensemble (minus the runway skirt) with bejewelled high-low jacket is by Prada, her heels are by Miu Miu.

Set Three
Karlie displays the unique and expert tailoring of Maison Martin Margiela in a step-waist wide-leg crepe trousers. I love the high-low asymmetrical cut on the waist and hemline. This look is beautifully contrasted by a tulle, silk and lace Alberta Ferretti gown with nude underlay & embellished halter neck and feather fringed skirt.

Set Four
Karlie is alluring in a curve-enhancing charcoal gown with mesh and leather inserts by Bottega Veneta. Moving onto a more macho look, she is dashing in a Donna Karan one-button coat and chic white shirt, styled with a top hat and Miu Miu heels.

Set Five
To the left, Karlie poses in a debonair tuxedo jacket by Maison Martin Margiela with satin lapel, her ankle boots are by Lanvin. Achieving gender style equity, Karlie looks exquisite in a transparent Emilio Pucci gown with shimmering geometric beadwork. A pair of crystal covered Christian Louboutin pumps fit her feet.

Taking a look at the contrast of androgynous and elegant styling placed side by side, which do you prefer...Feminine or Masculine?

Mischa Barton bravely mixes prints with a bronzed flower printed tuxedo jacket, dark blue floral jacquard trousers and ikat patterned loafers. Her outfit was anchored by a crisp white buttoned-up shirt and Stella McCartney bag.
Rihanna takes the masculine trend literally, wearing a grey and blue striped sweater and pants suit, with white shirt from Acne's menswear collection. An oversized marine blue Raf Simmons coat was thrown over for good measure.

Another great week of style, which is your favourite?

Friday Frills

There may be days when you get up in the morning and things aren't the way you had hoped they would be...
That's when you have to tell yourself that things will get better.

There are times when people will disappoint you and let you down...
But those are the times when you must remind yourself to trust your own judgments and opinions.

There will be always be challenges to face and changes to make in your life.
They are put in front of you not to deter you from your goals,
But instead to groom you and help you grow into the wise and perceptive person you were meant to be.
To keep your life focused on all that you are capable of.

Try to keep yourself headed in the right direction...for you
It may not be easy at times and the road ahead is long and winding,
But in those times of struggle you will find a stronger sense of who you are.

So when days come that are filled with frustration and unexpected responsibilities,
Remember to believe in yourself and all you want your life to be.
With this in mind, you will find the inspiration and courage to achieve all your
ambitions and dreams that you know you truly deserve!

Who Wore Monique Lhuillier Better?

Who Wore It Better?
Monique Lhuillier Neon Gown

Three award shows in eleven months - one sparkling neon dress. This fluorescent yellow Monique Lhuillier gown has made a vivid impact on the red carpet this year, worn by three different celebrities at three high profile Hollywood events. Either their stylists have not been paying attention or they must all just really love this dress.

Nicki Minaj donned the radiant lime green trumpet gown to the American Music Awards held this weekend on 18 November 2012. Her signature wild blonde tresses, hot pink lips and a statement gold neckpiece accented her look from Monique Lhuillier's Resort 2013 collection.
Modern Family actress Julie Bowen first wore the glaring acid green gown with drape-folded mermaid skirt to the 2012 Emmy Awards, which was held in Los Angeles on 22 September 2012. A gold Swarovski clutch bag and large Bochic earrings accessorized her outfit. Julie kept her hair and makeup low key.
Back in January 2012, Paula Patton wore what seems to be the same strapless dress, only in a slightly different shade of luminous lime yellow. The Mission:Impossible actress picked out the Spring 2012 version of Monique Lhuillier's showstopping gown for her appearance at the Golden Globe Awards. She carries a Judith Leiber clutch and wears Kwait jewels.

These are both the gleaming gowns as shown on the runway. The design is exactly the same, however the colour of the Resort 2013 dress differs slightly towards a more neon green tone.

As for 'Who Wore It Better'...I think it's clear the stunning and very striking gown suits every skin tone and sense of style, however my vote goes to Julie Bowen. She wears it with class and sophistication. What are your thoughts?

Winter Hair Trends 2012

Don't get stuck in a hair rut as the temperatures dive lower. This season, getting that straight-off-the-catwalk hair is easier than ever with a series of trend-driven hairstyles. All these ideas are effortlessly chic and simple enough to accomplish just with a handful of hair clips, hairspray and hair bands. This is your Fall/Winter 2012 runway-to-reality hairstyle inspiration.

Elegant Upstyles

Neatly folded French rolls, classic ballet buns, undone chignons - the upstyle takes center stage this season. To attain this timeless look, pull your hair into a ponytail with an elastic hair band, comb over to ensure there are no bumps, and twirl hair round into a coil with hair pins. Spray to hold. Leave a few loose ends as did the Michael Kors models or defy gravity with hair wax as seen at Preen. Take notes from Cacharel and add cute colourful clips or an embellished headband as styled at Dolce & Gabbana. The best way to combat a bad hair day, this ladylike look can be done on both wet or dry locks.

Twists and Braids
Put a twist into your daily hair routine with a few pretty braids. Versatile and feminine, use plaited pieces to create your own Alice Band or add a few braids in-between straight locks for some movement and contrast, as seen at Rachel Zoe. Stylists at Suno used hair clips to pin loose pieces up into place. Kenzo went edgier with fully twisted pigtails and halo braids. Romance was in the hair at Elie Saab and Valentino with pinned-up princess plaits.

Ponytails
The world's most female-friendly hairstyle is bigger than ever this winter. Ponytails are worn high, low, perfectly in precision, or loosely fastened for a laid-back look. Secure your ponytail at the nape of your neck, leaving a strand loose to tie over and conceal your hairband. Smoothen down any flyways with some hairspray and voila - the polished ponytail will provide you with ultimate sophistication in under 3 minutes with no effort involved at all.

Bouffants
Pump up the volume with the elevated & dramatic bouffant, set to add glamour and height to your style. This sixties inspired quiff makes a triumphant comeback as seen on the catwalks of Carolina Herrera, Derek Lam & Moschino. The newfangled faux bob made a statement at Rodarte & Oscar de la Renta. For this head-turning 2012 party look - a teasing comb, tons of hairspray & some effort is required. Add a ribbon or bow for that something extra.

Sleek and Straight
As shown on the runways of Prada and Prabal Gurung, smooth sleek hair with a velvety sheen is still a top trend. A good shine serum and exceptionally brilliant hair iron is your ideal way to attain this not-a-hair-out-of-place hairstyle. Parting your hair in a middle part adds to the chicness of this look. Be bold and take it one step further with blunt bangs as seen on the Marni models and at Elie Saab Couture.

Loose Locks

The get-out-of-bed-head look is the least complicated style to achieve this Fall. The focus is on tousled texture, unkempt waves & luscious looking locks. If you're lucky enough to have naturally wavy hair, allow your hair to air-dry, adding some mousse or salt spray, scrunching slightly. If you have straight hair, braid your hair in several sections while its still wet, allow to dry, spray & unwind your curls. Hot rollers or a hair iron can be used alternatively to get this sexy style. Glamourize the trend with a severe side part as seen at Lanvin or volumize by drying your hair upside gown with a hair dryer to achieve the Just Cavalli look.

Which of these Fall/Winter 2012 hair trends are you most likely to try out?

Looks of the Week - 17/11/12

The weekly round-up of celebrity style.

Red Radiance

Christian Serratos steals the 'Twilight' limelight in a figure-loving crimson red Zac Posen crepe gown with trailing skirt and puff sleeves.
Jenna Dewan-Tatum positively glowed in a pleated and draped Amanda Wakeley dress, perfectly complimented by Christian Louboutin 'Bis Un Bout' PVC pumps.
Designer Erin Fetherston looked lovely in a strapless dip-dyed tangerine dress with metallic gold belt from her own collection.

Necessary Chicness
Camilla Belle impressed in this very innovative dress by Preen, featuring a decoupage of transparent white insets, lace overlays and angular black leather panels.
Selena Gomez shows off her more mature side in a white Giambattista Valli peplum frock with sheer yoke and lace bodice. Her heels are by Rupert Sanderson.
Victoria Beckham continues to be her own best advertisement, wearing a slick black collared dress with mesh insert from her own label. Her peep-toe booties and crocodile clutch are also by the Victoria Beckham brand.
Other than the utterly sexy ivory Dion Lee dress Jessica Gomes is wearing, I am quite obsessed with her pastel pink bow handle clutch bag.

Little Lace Dresses
Keira Knightley stays true to her feminine sense of style in a verdant green lace Burberry Prorsum dress, paired with nude ankle-strap heels.
Dakota Fanning's pretty pink lace peplum dress is by Jason Wu, to which she added a black studded belt, a star printed clutch and black pointy-toe pumps.
Lauren Conrad is engaging in a cream cap-sleeved lace frock with nude Louboutin heels.

Glamour Gowns
Berenice Marlohe barely puts a fashion foot out of place. The 'SkyFall' actress looked stunning this week in a violet tulle and chiffon J.Mendel gown with delicate floral appliqués
Taylor Swift also opted for a J.Mendel gown, hers shimmery in icy white and silver grey with geometric embellished panels.
Keira Knightley was a vision in a pale mint satin duchess gown by Erdem, which is enhanced by a fine floral printed hem and bodice.

 Sunny Dispostion
Cody Horn played it cool in a sunflower yellow cross-halter dress with floral printed pocketed skirt by Thakoon. Strappy tan and gold sandals finalize her outfit.
Kristen Stewart radiates in a lumo yellow Christian Dior dress which is an excellent and vibrant colour choice for her. Black and white printed Barbara Bui shoes complete her look.
Elettra Wiedemann's chicly tiered beige and greige dress is uplifted by a refreshing pop of neon yellow.

Twilight and Sequins

Emma Stone does Burberry Prorsum proud in this stunning Spring 2013 ensemble of a satin corset peplum top and emerald green sequined skirt.
Ashley Greene wows in another majestic Donna Karan creation. Her navy blue gown comprised of a fitted paneled bustier top and artfully draped skirt.
Kristen Stewart ends off her 'Twilight' tour with a bang, glimmering in a gold fully sequined gown with high split by Elie Saab.
Dakota Fanning is pictured in a midnight blue Valentino gown with linear lattice cut-outs.

So many great looks this week...but which is your favourite?

Friday Frills

The longer we live, the more we begin to realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude is more important than facts.
It is more important than the past and than what will be.
More important than education, money, background and circumstances,
Than failures and successes,
And worth more than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, talent or skill.
It will make or break a company...a dream...a life…a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.

We cannot change our past and where we came from.
We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.
And we cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude…
I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you…we are all in charge of our own attitudes.

Twilight Stars Style Evolution

Five Years, Five Movies, Four Break-Out stars and a multitude of gorgeous gowns...
To commemorate the end of the Twilight Saga movie franchise this week, we take a look back at how each of the leading ladies' style has evolved since the beginning in 2008. This is a red carpet recap of all the world premiere events. Who has upped their style ante over the years?
Click the image for a larger view.

Kristen Stewart

Breaking Dawn Part 2 2012 - For the final movie premiere Kristen took a plunge and wore a very racy unlined Zuhair Murad gown. The caramel corseted strapless dress is completely see-though with a narrow waist belt. You either love it or hate it.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 2011 - Bold in blue, K-Stew wowed at the US premiere in a cobalt J.Mendel sequin sprayed gown with thigh-baring slit, along with Jimmy Choo heels
Breaking Dawn Part 1 2011 UK - Kristen was hypnotic at the London premiere in a black sheer beaded Roberto Cavalli gown, styled with a wide leather McQueen belt & Jimmy Choos.
Eclipse 2010 - For the June premiere, the 22-year-old star picked a pristine white embellished one-sleeved Elie Saab dress with nude Christian Louboutin pumps.
New Moon 2009 - Kristen went dainty and feminine in a white tulle Oscar de la Renta gown, specked with metallic graffiti beadwork.
Twilight 2008 - For her very first thrust into the Twilight spotlight, Kristen wore a tri-coloured Balenciaga Resort 2009 one-shouldered dress with black pumps. Edgy and sexy - two things definitive of the starlet's style.

Stand Out Look - The elegant black Roberto Cavalli gown. What I like about Kristen's Twilight style is her confidence to experiment with different types of looks.

Ashley Greene

Breaking Dawn Part 2 2012 - Ashley looks ethereal in a floaty pale one-shouldered Donna Karan gown with draped bodice and layered chiffon skirt.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 2011 - The actress was vampish in a custom made crimson red Donna Karan gown with asymmetrical layered panels.
Eclipse 2010 - The brunette beauty goes Grecian in a blue-grey Alexis Mabille strapless couture gown that's clasped at the side with a capacious silhouette.
New Moon 2009Ashley sizzled in a red haute Prabal Gurung gown, with high neck and off-the-shoulder added straps.
Twilight 2008 - Starting off on a stylish note back in '08, Ashley looked lovely in a black ruffle-tiered dress by Ina Soltani with decorative belt and strappy sandals.

Stand Out Look - 2011's radiant red Donna Karan gown. Ashley has always had a great sense of style, she continues to refine it as time goes by.

Dakota Fanning

Breaking Dawn Part 2 2012 - Dakota debuted her new brunette tresses at last night's premiere, looking regal in a teal blue Elie Saab gown with transparent lace side insert.
Eclipse 2010 - Dakota picked out a fawn shaded Elie Saab dress, beautifully embroidered with a feathered hemline. Her studded bow sandals are by Christian Louboutin.
New Moon 2009 - A much younger Dakota made her Twilight red carpet debut in a black lace Valentino dress with scalloped hem, pairing it with burgundy satin heels.

Stand Out Look - This week's Elie Saab gown was impeccable. For me, Dakota has had the most consistent style over the years, always pretty and charming.

Nikki Reed

Breaking Dawn Part 2 2012 - Rounding up her Twilight style, Nikki looked statuesque in an ice grey Versace gown with metallic trimmed corset.
Breaking Dawn Part 1 2011 - The 24-year-old brought beautiful colour to the carpet in a mint green Grecian inspired Marchesa gown with gold beaded border.
Eclipse 2010 - Nikki chose a fanciful powder blue Marchesa dress with embellished bodice, full feathered skirt and shoulders. This has an ice capades feel to it, don't you think?
New Moon 2009 - Nikki went simple in a icy blue Burberry Prorsum mini dress with drape-pleat detailing, a black belt and strappy Louboutin sandals.
Twilight 2008 - A mediocre start, Nikki's twilight red carpet debut was in a black and white floral Marchesa dress with Rene Caovilla pumps.

Stand Out Look - The finesse and poise of her 2012 Versace gown remains unmatched. Looking back, Nikki's style has definitely evolved for the better over the years.

Who is your favourite 'Twilight Style Star' and what do you think of their red carpet transformations?
