Beauty Foods - Your Guide to Glowing Skin

Before piling on the foundation, creams and spray tan to mask the signs of a dull complexion, try fixing the fundamentals of your diet first, as eating the right types of food can do wonders for your skin. The best way to attain a long-lasting glow is from the inside out. Skin-illuminating miracles are not always found in an expensive jar on your beauty store shelf...but actually in the aisles of your supermarket. Research has shown that eating certain types of super foods can help skin to repair and rejuvenate itself.

This is a guide to eat yourself to smoother, younger and more radiant skin - without not an ounce of makeup involved and very little calories.

Add Some Colour To Your Plate
*Tropical Fruits like mangoes and papaya contain Vitamin A and C which repair skin cells, while the content of Vitamin C and E in kiwi fruit combat wrinkles and lines.
*Avocados are rich in B-complex, potassium, phytonutrients and good essential oils, and act as a skin soothing and plumping agent. Avos are also known to remedy psoriasis and dry skin.
*Nutritious vegetables like Sweet potato and Carrots contain beta carotene which protects your skin from the free radicals caused by pollution, the sun and smoking.
*Strawberries and Blueberries not only taste good but they also have a high proportion of Vitamin C (even more than oranges) and are a super-antioxidant, keeping skin from sagging.
*Tomatoes are high in lycopene & selenium, offering protection against harmful UV rays & redness caused by sunburn. They help the production of collagen for fewer fine lines.
*Cantaloupe & other types of melon cleanse your body and rids them of harmful toxins.
*Squeeze some Citrus Fruits into your diet for their ability to detoxify, clear up skin and fight those evil free radicals.
*Jam-packed with calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium and Vitamin E, eat some Beets for their skin-healing and toxin eliminating resources.

Pack on the Proteins

*Yogurt contains important dairy proteins and enzymes that firm up your epidermis, improve on its appearance and calms irritable skin conditions.
*Tofu is a source of isoflavones, that encourages smoother skin and collagen production.
*Superfood Salmon is a fantastic source of natural fatty acids (the good type) and Omega 3 and 6, which hydrates your skin and improves its elasticity.
*Oysters are filled to capacity with Zinc - that all important ingredient for beautifully glossy hair and strong, healthy nails.
*Eggs contain antioxidant agents lutein & zeaxanthin that aid against brown sun spots.
*Selenium and calcium filled Cottage Cheese is another excellent addition to your diet, acting as a natural moisturizer and correcting conditions like dandruff.

Go Green

*Peppermint aids digestion and has vital skin cleansing properties.
*We should have listened to Popeye all those years ago...Spinach is a source of skin-protecting lutein & folates, that help cells renew themselves. No wonder he never got old!
*Add some leafy green, sulphur enriched Watercress to your salad, as it contains Vitamin A and C, which naturally relieves skin, flushing out toxins and clearing it of blemishes.
*Alfalfa sprouts look great as a garnish and are also packed with multivitamins.
*Super food Broccoli may not be everyone's favourite but this Vitamin C-filled green assists with ironing out wrinkles and keeping skin supple.

Glowing Skin Drinks

*Water is not only an essential, it's a must for glowing skin, as dehydration results in a grey and sallow looking completion. Stay radiant by drinking up to 8 glasses a day.
*Green Tea contains polyphenols which work as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. It has also been proven to help reverse sun damage and signs of rosacea.
*Nettle Tea acts as an anti-inflammatory, assisting with skin ailments like acne and eczema.
*A single cup of Coffee a day may reduce your risk of skin cancer. It's the caffeine that zaps those ultraviolet affected skin cells before they can cause any more harm. Read more here.

Pretty, Naturally
*Include a handful of almonds in your daily food routine as they contain vital Vitamin E that moisturizes skin from within. They also protect skin from premature aging and sun damage.
*Low GI beans, legumes and pulses are all high in fibre, ensuring your digestive system is regulated, which in turn helps to clear up your skin.
*Spice your dishes with manganese enhanced Cinnamon, as it prevents acne and clogged pores and also reduces redness.
*Treat yourself to some flavanol-filled Dark chocolate for its anti-oxidizing qualities and skin smoothing effects. It also absorbs UV light. Read more on its benefits here. Who Knew!
*Oats are known for being great skin healers and keeps you looking younger. Oat milk also eases acne issues.
*Toss some pumpkin seeds, linseeds, flaxseeds and walnuts into your morning cereal, as they contain Omega 3 and 6 oils, which aid against inflammatory skin conditions like eczema.
*Whole grains - brown bread, wholewheat pasta and brown rice contain antioxidants that help attain a more youthful looking outer layer. They also regulate blood sugar levels, which is directly related to having healthy skin.

Do you include any of these super foods in your current diet?

Hi Sam! What an interesting post you wrote today. You know, among my interests there are also food and wellness, I always try to keep posted regarding helthy food and what is the best to eat to protect also the skin and what it should be better avoid. I agree on the ones food you listed which I actually try to have often. Especially I drink green tea every day and, though many people dislike its taste, I really like it. Also I like tofu (I stopped to eat meat 1 year ago just cause I dont like the taste anymore so tofu is a good alternative when you go to restaurants), also dont miss to eat every kind of veggies and fruit. I am also addicted to almonds, dark chocolate and coffee:) Kisses dear, have a nice evening! xo

Interesting to hear about coffee reducing the risk of skin cancer. The good news I'm reading here is that because I eat avacados every night with dinner my skin won't dry out. Great post

These are fab tips! I didn't know that about caffeine and skin cancer. I believe that a glowing complexion def. starts from within. It's also important to have good fats in our diets so that our skin doesn't become too dry.

I absolutely loved this post! I am a big believer in the 'beauty from the inside out' concept, and clean eating is a constant goal of mine! I've really been working on making my snacks super healthy throughout the day and eat lots of the things you mentioned. My common snacks are: apples, oranges, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, almonds, carrots and berries! And I drink water and green tea all day every day :)
