Brian Atwood RZ Boots

Chain-Back Over-The-Knee Boots
by Brian Atwood

Famed shoe designer, Brian Atwood created these fabulous over-the-knee boots for celebrity stylist and friend Rachel Zoe, hence the name RZ. And she isn't the only one who loves them. Celebs like Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian own a pair too.

These platform boots are sexy and stylish in black suede, with a silver chain lining the entire back seam. The long contoured silhouette lengthens your appearance. As pictured above, the boots can be worn with a party dress, trench coat or paired over jeans and tights. Wear them with vests, oversized t-shirts, blazers and knits.

The thigh-high stiletto boot is a huge trend for winter, and I am sure versions of this one will filter down into our local boutiques. Depending on your choice of outfit, this boot works well for casual day wear or for a glamourous night out. The RZ boot was intended to be a limited edition, but due to demand and high popularity, it was reissued by the designer. It sells for $2900 in the US.

A Newsless Newspaper

In Small Town, SA, nothing noteworthy really happens. We do have occasional offenses, minor political problems and some farm related issues. When these incidents occur, you can read about it in our local newspaper. 3 weeks after it happens or, most likely, not at all.

I recall the first thing I learnt about 'the news' in a Journalism lecture at university. That it's new, topical and based on current events that are significant to the society it is aimed at. That does not apply here in Small Town, SA. Our local and only newspaper has been running since 1903, and since then, the only thing that has changed is the introduction of colour photos. It comes out once a week, which is too often, as there is nothing relevant to fill the pages. Actually, there is, but you would probably hear about it from your next door neighbour, not your newspaper. I have no idea why they completely omit 'the news', as there is news to report on. Wherever you go, no matter how small or boring a place is, there will always be something to write about.

During the medical strikes of last year, our newspaper failed to report about the seriously ill patients that were turned away from the hospital, or the extent to which innocent people suffered. During the school strikes, there was no mention of the worried teachers, panicked parents or rebellious students. Nor the vandalism and intimidation that came with it. Two years ago, I heard over a national radio station about a major uprising against the mayor in our town. Our newspaper seemed oblivious to the riots and homes set alight. A string of violent crimes took place recently, but that too, of course was not important enough to feature in our local paper. So what then is?

Well, each week, the front page story will almost always have something to do with the local high school. Students that did well in exams or victorious sports teams, cheerleaders, concerts or any other trivial school event. The next page will be a religious note, followed by 2 more pages of school news. Then a 'Women's Page' with copied-and-pasted health articles and really unappetizing recipes. This is followed by the last few pages, which reports on local sporting events. By sporting events, I mean school rugby and hockey matches and weekly results from the golf club. In between all the 'news', there are promotions, classifieds and adverts, which finance this publication. There are more advertorials than there are editorials.

I shudder to think that if the high school or golf club closed down, we may not have a newspaper at all. Maybe that's actually not such a bad thought. Perhaps you're wondering why I never applied to write for our paper. When I completed my Journalism degree, it was the first thing I did. However, they told me that they didn't need any 'journalists' to write for their paper, and they were doing pretty fine just as they were. At least I tried, so now I don't have to feel guilty about not informing the community every time something newsworthy does happen. That's what we have neighbours for anyway, right? To tell us about the news. Newspapers are so 1903, they have become obsolete :P

So, as this farm-town newspaper has no real use, I have decided to collect my weekly copies and turn it into something fashionable. I'm going to use the picture below as inspiration ;)

Tuesday Thrills - Sula Paint & Peel Polish

Paint & Peel Nail Polish
by Sula Beauty

Do you remember using Tinkerbell nail polish when you were little? It came in a candy pink colour and once you put it on, you could easily peel it off. Sula Beauty, a Toronto based brand, have reinvented that idea for adults. If you're indecisive in choosing a nail colour or like to change your nail polish as often as you change your clothes, this product is for you.

Sula Paint & Peel is a non-toxic, water based polish that works in two ways. You can apply the colour on it's own - it requires 2-3 coats and expect the colours to be slightly darker than shown in the bottle. Once dry, it will last you about a day's worth of colour before chipping. The point of it is not to be long lasting, but rather easily changeable for the trendy make-up user. If you would like it to last longer, you can paint over with a clear or metallic Lasting Love topcoat, which will 'set' the polish. The metallic base has tiny glittery particles that will provide a slight shine.

When you're bored with the colour or need a change, simply peel off. It's that easy. This nail product comes in juicy and wearable colours, so you can match a new colour to your clothes everyday. Choose from aqua Azure, Watermelon pink, Slate gray, Tango red and many more.

Sula Paint & Peel polishes are now available in South Africa at ImageXplosion branches in Johannesburg, P.E and Cape Town at the price of R120. Phone 011 492 1358 for more information.

From the brand founder Susanne Lang:
Break rules, Set Trends, And always play pretty.

Oscar Party Dresses

Red Carpet Fashion
at the Oscar Parties 2011

Besides for just the Oscars, there were many pre-parties and after parties held in Hollywood to celebrate the illustrious awards show. These are some of the dresses and colour trends worn by rising stars and silver screen sirens alike.

Blue

Rosario Dawson wears a bright blue wrap sequin dress with high slit by Diane von Furstenberg. Her shoes are by Brian Atwood. Kim Kardashian looks lovely in a strapless and fitted dark navy gown by J Mendel. Lea Michele glitters in blue sequins in this 70's inspired high-neck, long-sleeved dress by Roberto Cavalli. Glee's Dianna Argon wears a simple and chique chiffon navy dress with plunging neckline by J Mendel. Her peep-toe pumps are by Salvatore Ferragamo. Juliette Lewis is dressed in a midnight blue Georges Hobeika Couture gown with strapless sweetheart neckline.

Grey
Kerry Washington wears a liquid silver Escada gown with a Jimmy Choo clutch. Vanessa Hudgens looks amazing in this sparkly little number by Marchesa. I'm not too sure about the choice of sandals, which are by Sergio Rossi. Emma Robert's grey chiffon sequined gown is by Jenny Packham with clutch by Kelly Locke. Model and actress Brooklyn Decker looks beautiful in this romantic ruffle gown by Joy Cioci. I'm not so fond of Heidi Klum's mirrored dress by Julien Macdonald. She wears Christian Louboutin 'Daffodil Strauss' shoes with it.

Black
Kate Beckinsale looks elegant in a long-sleeved black sequined gown by Julien Macdonald. Eva Mendes wears a black dress with full tulle skirt by Donna Karan and shoes by Casadei. Abbie Cornish looks stunning in a black beaded gown by Elie Saab. Alice in Wonderland actress Mia Wasikowska wears a charming guipure lace dress with cap-sleeves by Stella McCartney and peep-toes by Brian Atwood. The sultry Sofia Vergara wears a corset dress with lace panels by Zuhair Murad.

 Red
Red dresses ruled on and off the Oscar carpet. Ginnifer Goodwin dons a quirky red satin dress with black lace detail by Erdem. Salut to Selena Gomez who chose this gorgeous Grecian-inspired dress by Dolce & Gabbana. I adore the red and pink dress worn by Zoe Saldana. The two-tone layered dress is by Prabal Gurung, with tassel bag by Louis Vuitton and pink metallic heels by Ferragamo. Anna Paquin wears a Monique Lhuillier dress with laser-cut detail on the skirt. Are she and Ginnifer wearing the same Brian Atwood 'Donna' pumps? Anna Kendrick wears a strapless mini by Marchesa with huge bow and ruffles. She paired it with black bag and heels by Christian Louboutin.

White
Spanish actress Paz Vega wears a loose tie-waist top and full ruffled skirt by Giambattista Valli. Nicole Richie is dressed by Halston in a long-sleeve, high-slit dress with cut-out detail. Her silver python sandals are by Christian Louboutin. 90210's Jessica Lowndes wears an off-white mini with gold embroidery on the bodice. Charlize Theron is glamourous in a draped Atelier Versace gown with a Swarovski crystal design at the waist. I don't like the shape on Hayden Panettiere's Luca Luca dress, which has a high slit and gold detailing on the bodice.
Gold
Gwyneth Paltrow wears a one-shoulder jersey dress with crystal beading by Michael Kors. Taylor Swift dazzles in a strapless beaded mini by Zuhair Murad. She matched the dress with a gold clutch and sandals by Jimmy Choo. Ashley Tisdale is stylish in an antique lace asymmetrical gown by Jenny Packham. Jessica Biel glistens in a gold beaded gown by Atelier Versace. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wears a strapless nude-toned gown by Valentino Couture. The 'Jigsaw' sandals are by Jimmy Choo.

Tuesday Thrills - Studded Biker Jackets

The biker jacket has evolved from personal protective gear for motorcyclists to a fashion statement for women who may have never been on a bike. A leather jacket adds an edge to modern dresses and feminine clothes. This season, the studded range adds some extra adornment to your everyday cropped, roughed-up leather jacket.

Pictured left is a heavily silver-studded black leather biker from Burberry Prorsum. It has an asymmetrical zip, zip-up cuffs and pockets, with multi-sized studs on the collar, belt and sleeves. It is priced at £4 950,52

In the middle is a studded, cracked leather jacket by Just Cavalli. It's simpler and perhaps more wearable than the previous jacket. The shoulders and collar are edged with silver studs. The fit can be adjusted with buckled tabs at the back of the waist. It is priced at £1 917,15

To the right is a lighter cotton cropped jacket from Danish brand Day Birger Et Mikkelson. It still has that biker appeal without being too tough and can be worn  on cooler Autumn days. The jacket is available in a chalk beige colour and is embellished with gun-metal studs. It is priced at £597,89

Wear your biker over tees and jeans, body-con dresses or with floaty printed frocks for a pretty punk-rock look. All jackets are available online from net-a-porter.
