That Dior Dress

I didn't think much of this Christian Dior dress when I first saw it on the runway, other than it reminded me of a sweet wrapper. However, as the months go by, I am beginning to see more and more of it on the red carpet and in magazine editorials all around the globe. This multi-shaded striped organza dress is fast becoming one of the most photographed looks from Dior's Spring 2013 collection. Let's observe the rise-and-rise of that Dior dress.

On the Dior SS13 runway, Kasia Struss modeled the candy coloured
dress that strongly influenced editors and celebrities everywhere.

The diaphanous dress has already been photographed three times on the red carpet.
Left: Model Lee Hyun Yi wore the look to an event in Seoul, South Korea.
Center: Australian actress Isabel Lucas donned the youthful dress to a Sydney store opening.
Right: American socialite Lisa Marie Falcone wore the Dior dress just this week in New York City. I have to admit this dress looks far better in editorial than it does in 'real-life'.

Left: Dutch model Daphne Groeneveld is enveloped in a colorful swirl of organza for the cover of Harper's Bazaar EspaƱa April 2013. Right: Rose Smith is given a sportier styling in Vogue Australia, with inner black tank top and wrist bands.

Left: Amanda Seyfried graces the April 2013 cover of Tatler Russia, accessorized with bold green earrings and a multi-coloured necklace. Right: Valerija Kelava gives new meaning to the term 'urban' glamour for Antidote Magazine's Street Issue.

Left: Natalia Vodianova displays the pink bandeau side strap thats holds this gauzy dress together. A rose-shaded neck-tie and soft makeup add to the romance of her styling.
Right: Vanessa Hudgens, on the other end of the spectrum, is given a spikey punk rock hairstyle and plastered with heavy makeup.

Left: Irish actress Saoirse Ronan adds vivid colour to a dusky forest scene for Instyle MagazineRight: Singer Kelly Chen covers Marie Claire Hong Kong's April 2013 issue in the fluorescent dress. The lighting in this photo makes the shades look somewhat darker.

Elle Fanning gives a playful edge to the dress, blending into the plastic background for New York Magazine. In this case, it really does look like a candy wrapper.

Left: Russian model Vlada Roslyakova makes a bright splash on the cover of Marie Claire Korea's March 2013 edition. Right: Nico O is dressed up in the famous frock with asymmetrical hemline for a fashion page in Marie Claire UK March 2013. I think her metallic strap heels are a pivotal part of what makes this look work here.

Clearly a fashion editor favourite, do you think this Dior dress deserves all the hype or not?

Hi Sam! I was waiting your Wed post all the day!:) Btw, let me be honest, when I saw it on runway I also didnt think too much of it and in fact neither remember it! You did a great research job dear, I didnt notice it was so popular at the mo! I only saw the cover with Natalia Vodianova, who, in my opinion, is the best to wear it, maybe for the add of the pink ribbon! Thanks a lot for stopping by, your words always make me smile:)) Have a nice evening, hugs! xo

The dress reminds me of a candy wrapper too and maybe that's why it works well as magazine covers and editorials! You feel like picking up the magazine coz it looks so candylicious!

Just my thoughts! A great post! :)

Oh wow, it is everywhere! The dress is okay looking for me. I can't get over how much it looks like a candy wrapper and the there isn't much form or shape to it but I guess that's why it's more high end fashion.

Wow looks like candy wrapper and I love candy. It´s pretty cool. I wouldn´t mind to own it but well it´s from Dior and too pricey for me. My favs Nico O. and Isabel Lucas <3

Wow this dress really is becoming more prestigious! To be honest Im not too keen on it, although it does look very differently on different people. It actually looks flattering :)

Hmmm. I .. I.. just don't know how to feel about it honestly...It reminds me of a cheeseburger! Weirdly enough. A cheeseburger? I know right?

Excellent compilation Sam! I didn't like this dress on the runway, nor do I like it for the magazines. I don't know if it's the color combination or what. It just never appealed to me.

The dress didn't really say much to me either on the runway, but to be honest I think it looks quite good in some of these photos - such as on Isabel Lucas or Daphne Groeneveld. It's definitely interesting, that's for sure!
I really liked your comparison with the candy wrapper by the way, so true :)

I'm sorry but in my opinion this dress is a complete NO-NO!!!

This dress is definitely unique! I think it looks good in some photos and bad in others. I think Lee Hyun definitely wore it best in the real world and I like Saoirse in Instyle's editorial the most.

Hey Sam! It's definitely deserves the hype from a editors point of view. The dress looks great photographed on a model. My favorite is on Nico O. I agree with you the shoes are a great match.

Ha, your sweet wrapper comment made me laugh, it does bear more than a passing resemblance... Wow, this piece really has taken the world by storm, great round up Sam! I have to say I'm not a massive fan of the dress, but it looks pretty cool on the magazine covers - definitely eye catching and attention grabbing. Think my fave styling is on Natalia Vodianova, that pink necktie is a cute idea. Hope you week is going well!

ROXTHEFOX said...

Lol at wrapper! I can't really say I love it, to be honest. I think the mullet skirt kills it for me. I enjoy a mix of colors and patterns usually, but this one doesn't fit together. Looks like pieces of different dresses sown together and it just doesn't work. I think the editors have lost it haha!

When I first saw it I thought - they must have been in the shower and had to run and get the door because it looks like a shower curtain wrapped around the model. Actually the editorial shots look pretty fabulous but the real people looks don't quite live up to it. I do, however think Lee Hyun Hi wore it best - it looks elegant on her shape and the way she styled it.

Have a great day!

Hmm while pretty I think this is over hyped - you're so right about it looking like a sweet wrapper!

katie said...

Heh, when I looked at the first picture, the dress almost looked like it had yellow lighting bolts on it! It's kind of(really) a strange dress but I think you said it best, it works better in the editorials than it does in really life. It just looks strange on the red carpet but I actually love it in the first two magazine covers. It actually looks gorgeous on the Harper's Bazaar cover, it has so much movement and looks really vibrant.

Interesting topic Sam. I think it has been so successful because it looks completely different depending on who and how styles it. I like it because the organza wrap creates a play of light which gives light to it.
