This Season's Most Famous Sweater

Givenchy
Bambi Print Sweater
Fall/Winter 2013

Who knew that a long forgotten cartoon character could cause a worldwide fashion frenzy? I certainly didn't. But Givenchy certainly did when they placed a beloved Disney character as the focal feature of their Fall/Winter 2013 collection. Bambi has stylishly sauntered his way from a 1942 animated movie to the catwalks of Paris. The endearing little deer has been superimposed on a vintage female figure to form this season's trendy new style emblem. From the creative mind of Riccardo Tisci to magazines and celebrity closets everywhere, this strangely adorable sweatshirt has claimed its title as this season's hottest commodity.

The highly popularized Bambi print comes in several editions; a black neoprene sweatshirt, a T-shirt, a lace-sleeved version seen on the runway and a sleeveless tank top.

The Runway
It took these two looks from Givenchy's Fall/Winter 2013 runway to spark a craze that compelled the fashion world into Bambi mania.

The Editorials
This fashion fad has found itself a favourite with stylists and fashion editors across the planet. American model Lindsey Wixon wears hers with a printed Givenchy skirt. Spanish belle Dalianah Arekion poses in black in white for V Magazine. Brit model Sam Rollinson features in I-D Magazine. Russian model Anne Vyalitsyna stands tall in the deer printed sweatshirt, with sheer spotted pencil skirt and ankle boots, all by Givenchy. Australia's Clare Byrne dons the cartoon patterned top for Interview Germany and Estonian beauty Alexandra Tikerpuu sweaters up for Stylist Magazine.

The Covers
Fei Fei Sun went from the Givenchy runway to the cover of Vogue China in the Disney inspired sweater. Elle Fanning brought out the softer side of this somewhat grunge piece on the cover of Miss Vogue Australia. Isabeli Fontana is striking on the cover of Telva Spain. Russian beauty Daria Strokous fronts Vogue Japan in the chic sweatshirt. Alexa Chung gets the opportunity to don this season's most wanted sweater on Madame France Magazine.

The Fashion Editors
Even the expert stylists have jumped on board the Bambi train. Vogue Japans's Anna Dello Russo and French fashion royalty Carine Roitfeld were both pictured in the famous sweater. Anna clinched hers in with a black belt and walked in imposing reptilian striped leather ankle boots, also by Givenchy. Carine wore the lace-sleeved sweater on two separate occasions. First she styled the in-demand jumper with a black pencil skirt and ankle strap sandals. Second, she wore it with a sheer spotted Givenchy maxi at the 2013 Met Gala.

The Media Campaigns
The superimposed sweater has been a favored celebrity choice for media appearances and campaigns. Miranda Kerr modeled the look for Net-a-Porter's web magazine. Rising starlet Hailee Steinfeld picked a tank top in the memorable motif, prettified by a floral print midi skirt. Amanda Seyfried fronts Givenchy's FW13 campaign in the coveted piece, with a matching Bambi-stamped clutch. Miroslava Duma Instagrammed her doe-eyed look, styled with a belt and black and white tulip skirt. Beyonce wears the tank edition with denim shorts and South Korean actress Son Dam Bi wore hers with a leather skater skirt.

The Street Stylistas
Lala Anthony, singers Rochelle Humes and Monica all paired their Givenchy Bambi jumpers with leather leggings. Taiwanese actress Tiffany Hsu opted for a sheer black maxi skirt and Lily Collins daringly went without pants, along with Givenchy ankle wrap sandals.

You can buy the original Givenchy Bambi print sweater for a whopping $1,375 from Net-a-Porter.com. Or you could settle for the generic version made by Primark for just €12 ($16).

Do you think Givenchy's Bambi print sweatshirt is worth the hype? Yay or Nay?
Judging by it being sold out on almost every online luxury boutique, it just might be.

hello Sam:) how are you? hope you had a good start to the week.
i've really been seeing this shirt everywhere... honestly i don't even know what's so special about this print:D i think the primark one is a lot cuter:)) in my opinion it's just a hype because all the big fashionistas are wearing it and because everybody knows that this print is givenchy.

thanks for sharing these pictures:)
lots of love xx

I'm still deciding if Bambi sweater is a do or a don't
Think don't. For sure I don't want to spend such a lot of money for the original when your suggesteion is ever more cute! :)

Hi Sam, hope you are well. I have to say I am still loving this Givenchy sweater even though its been shown so many times and on lots of different people. I love how Carine Roitfeld styled it with the sheer maxi skirt :)

Take care,

Hi Sam, I think it's totally worth the hype. The sweater looks so cute and cool at the same time. I love it esp. on Amanda Seyfried and Lindsey Wixon. The price is ridiculous for a sweater! I would totally pick the Primark version too if we only had on over here. Jeez they need an online shop!!! My parcels from H&M have just arrived. Poor postman. Can't wait to open them. I got the jeans and sweatpants from the girls section and the fringe booties. Lola ordered them for me. I wouldn't have cos they are 200€!! I will probably send them back. Lola and Holly got me many things. It would take too long to list them over here. We also bought the jewelry and probably will make a giveaway. If it looks great that is. Have a happy Tuesday Sam. Over here the weather is truly depressing :D

Wow, yes, everybody is wearing it... as I can see here! I once published on my old blog shoes that had Bambi's face, and at the time no one liked. But a sweater, why not? I say maybe for me, cause I don't like saying No! and some time later surrender :) It has already happened, so, I say now maybe - but for me. :) denisesplanet com

The sweater is certainly lovely but the original one is far too expensive from my point of view.. Your posts are awesome! Fore sure there is a lot of work behind each one..:)

I first saw this design when I was in the tube in London, a girl had a Givenchy bag and the bag had this figure.
Looking all those women in your post that wore the sweater shows me how much we are "brainwashed" by marketing, they make us want it by advertising it so much. It reminds me the Kenzo sweater with the tiger.
I think it's not worth the hype and certainly not worth the money. It's crazy how expensive it is.
I understand an expensive bag or shoes that are made of good leather but I don't get the cost of this sweater.

The design is really unique like the other ones from Givenchy but i think there's really a symbolisation lying under its popularisation. And it's really look symbolic to me like those Kenzo Eye Sweater. What do you think? And it's overrated just like Isabel Marant for H&M collection

No, I don't think Givenchy Bambi print sweatshirt is worth the hype. I personally dont like it this much. it is probably really trandy to wear somthing like that, but we have to remember that sense of proportion shoul be in anything. It's really important to be yourself and follow your own sense of style.
Great post, Sam!

1,375??? Are they for real????:D I don't think my conscience would allow me to buy a piece of cloth for that much money.:) I saw that show and that sweater and no, I didn't have a clue people would go crazy over it either. But think about it, how many people have the means to buy clothes like these. How much are they making if buying a sweater for 1000+ dollars doesn't faze them?? The imbalances of this world are crazy...

little luxury list said...

It is definitely adorable, but there is a reason why only celebrities wear it. $1375 for a piece that will obviously only be worn this season isn't worth it!

Hi Sam! I think the sweater is so cute and adorable, so for me it is worth the hype, what I dont agree is the splurge on it, the price is really too expensive for this kind of garment! But the low cost alternative by Primark definitely worth and I need to find it! The print is even cuter! I like all the looks from the streets, the covers and the editorials. Lol I dislike the fashion editors with it though!:P Have a good day dear, kisses! xo

Where have I been? I didn't know about this before. I do like it but I'd definitely go for the Primmark version, it is so sweet and seems like wonderful value. I am suprirsed it has been so popular with the celebs, just not something I would have expected. Omg no! Haha - one trend I won't be jumping on any time soon even if I could afford it! I think the genius behind this is everyone loves bambi and has nostalgia about it - if you can get people feeling something - especially when it comes to clothing - then you've got them. Hearts + Minds. Btw, I think i had a bambi shirt growing up - that looked fairly similar!
