Gingham Style

Trendspotting
Gingham Prints

Made popular in the sixties, and the 18th century before that, Gingham has been around for a long long time. Recognized by its distinguishable checked print, gingham has recently been reinvented on the 2013 runways to suit the modern fashionabilities of the 21st century girl.

On the Runway
The Spring 2013 runways were gingered with gingham prints, each designer using this timeless design in a unique and fresh way. Kinder Aggugini, Marc Jacobs, Lela Rose, Nanette Lepore and Prada kept true to the original essence of the tiny checkered print in their collections. Cacharel, Kate Spade, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Oscar de Renta and Henry Holland jazzed up the print with vibrant colours and trendy silhouettes. Aquilano.Rimondi went for a quirkier appeal, while Sportmax, Marni and Topshop Unique further advanced the print into a grid-like pattern.

Celebrities Doing Gingham Style

Since it's stint on the Spring and Fall 2013 runways, the trend has been fervently adopted by starlets & socialites, each doing their own spin on Gingham Style.

Cropped Gingham Frocks
Chloe Moretz went sweet and girly in a pastel pink gingham print Opening Ceremony dress. Sarah Jessica Parker wears a red and white wrapover dress by Oscar de la Renta. Nina Dobrev was onto the trend a year ago, spotted in a flirty denim blue gingham frock by D&G. Kirsten Dunst was delightful in a navy & white vintage-styled Miu Miu look. Even Anna Wintour has caught onto Gingham Style, seen in a red & white Marni dress.

Casual Inspired Gingham Styles
Dita von Teese went retro at Coachella in a black and white flower decked gingham dress. Amber Heard does gingham grunge in a red and black check print midi-skirt, paired with a white vest and black sandals. Miranda Kerr styled her gridded Stella McCartney blazer simply with a jeans and tee. Taylor Swift wears a classic red and black Topshop checkered shirt, with skinny jeans and brogues. Alexa Chung tried out the trend in larger checks, seen in a chic black & white shirt dress by Paul Smith.

Gingham Glam

Gingham can also be dressed up for more formal occasions. Marion Cotillard was elegant in a black and white checked Christian Dior skirt. Carly Rae Jepsen styled her black and white checkerboard dress with a bright red tuxedo blazer and Ruthie Davis spiked stilettos. Miroslava Duma goes for a bolder block print in beige and white by Louis Vuitton. Kylie Minogue wears multi-gingham print in a sexy cut-out Stella McCartney dress.

Hi Sam! I like this kind of print too! I think is perfect for spring and summer but have to admit that still dont own any garment with it! In particular I'd love to have a coloured shirt in gingham, something similar to the one Taylor Swift is wearing, also a blazer but in black and white, something as your n.5 find by Zara, very posh!:) Have a great day dear, big kiss! xo

Hi Sam! THanks for checking in. :) So, I love gingham print and always will, as I love 60's prints so much! I am obsessed with Mira Duma in Louis Vuitton and I want that outfit soooooo badly! I'm determined to learn to sew just so that I can make my own outfit just like it one day! Haha! I'm nuts! xx Pip

Can you believe that the only place I'm currently using gingham is on my tablecloth? Such a shame! But it is about to change: I'm utterly smitten with that red & white Asos dress, and I'm about to hunt it down :) Thank you for the inspiration, sweetie!

Have a lovely day! Sending lots of love and hugs

I didn't know you call it gingham style. Reading the title of this post, I was scared it was going to be about some kind of a new Gangnam style, to be honest :-p
It's not really my thing, but I do like Marion Cotillard's look.

The Gingham pattern, dearest Sam, is one of my most fav patterns <3 For example I own a blouse in black&white Gingham which I have worn so often that soon it will break ;) Many thanks for your effort for this wonderful inspiration!

I had no idea, this is called Gingham. Judging by the title, I thought this post has something to do with that (annoying) song Gangnam style.:D I'm sure glad it doesn't... I'm not the biggest fan of the smaller versions, but that Stella McCartney blazer Miranda has on is to die for!!

I love it, but sometimes I think it's not so good on me or rather, you know how people used to look at the way I dressed in the past, and I have downdressed so to fit... I was wrong, but I preferred this way, not to be so outstanding! I loved the Oscar de la Renta's skirt and Kisten Dunst's outfit!!!! I just saw you posted aboit Selena Gomez yesterday, but I was solving family issues, you know... next week I hope things get to be normal again!

Fantastic round up Sam! I'm loving the colourful prints but not so much the monochrome look, it looks a little dated to me, I guess y'know as it's been around since the 18th century...(I didn't know that, amazing!).

Loving Nina Dobrev and Marion Cotillard's looks the most - so chic! And that ASOS skater dress is just delish, absolutely gorgeous!

I think gingham is the classic summer print and it often reminds me of school uniforms as our primary school summer dresses were pale blue and white gingham! It's a fresh, fun print too and I especially like the bigger checks that you have featured here. The designs are certainly more stylish than our school dresses.
